Connecting Auckland's Future Communities
Planning Auckland’s transport future together
Te Tupu Ngātahi means ‘to grow together as one’.
Te Tupu Ngātahi Supporting Growth is a collaboration between Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. Our alliance also includes consultancies AECOM and Beca and legal providers Bell Gully and Buddle Findlay.
Together, we’re proud to help plan safe, accessible and liveable communities for future Aucklanders.
We’re responsible for investigating and planning more than 70 transport projects to support urban growth in Auckland over the next 30 years. We’re planning for future growth now, before new homes and communities are built.
Our transport projects will connect new communities, help Aucklanders travel by safe, low-carbon ways and deliver essential infrastructure to future-proof the economy.
By 2050 Auckland’s population is expected to grow by another one million people.
Around 30 per cent of this new growth will go into future urban zoned areas (greenfield sites) identified in the Auckland Unitary Plan.
To connect future communities, Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi have outlined a long-term strategic transport network. It contains well-designed transport connections that are safe, accessible and sustainable for Auckland’s new growth areas:
- Silverdale, Dairy Flat, Wainui and Orewa in the North
- Kumeū-Huapai, Redhills, Whenuapai and Riverhead in the North West
- Takaanini, Ōpāheke, Drury, Paerata and Pukekohe in the South
We’re working with Auckland Council to integrate our transport planning with council’s land use plans to create high quality and more compact future communities with greater access to active and public transport options.
We’re now well underway with detailed investigations, business cases and preparing planning applications and resource consents to protect the land needed for future transport projects – safety upgrades, and new and upgraded public transport connections, walking and cycling links, roads and state highways.
We’re proud to be planning now to give Aucklanders more sustainable travel choices and provide certainty for future communities.
